When you think of rap songs, you may think about fast, mainstream music used to lift the energy in a room. However, that isn’t always the case. There is a portion of hip-hop that can present a more depressing tone. Sometimes you just need music to mirror your mood. So if you find yourself alone in your room at 3am in the morning, then this playlist is for you.
11. Beau Young Prince – Let Go
Coming straight from the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack, this song is no doubt one of the most underrated tracks from this album. Beau Young Prince’s melodic vocals and rap vocals compliment eachother perfectly.
10. YNW Melly – No Heart
I think YNW Melly has one of the best voices in the hip-hop game right now. The melodic nature of it compliments the sad tone in the majority of his music. Definitely an underrated track.
9. Lil Wayne (feat. Post Malone) – What About Me
Post Malone & Lil Wayne was not a collaboration I would have expected. However, due to the melodic and slow nature of this song, both of their voices work perfectly.
8. Tyla Yaweh – They Ain’t You
Tyla Yaweh is genuinelly extremelly underrated. He gained popularity with his collabration with Post Malone on the track Tommy Lee. Since then, he’s released various songs which deserve more recognition.
7. Kanye West (Ye) & XXXTENTACION – True Love
Kanye West (Ye) uses XXXTENTACION’s vocals to create a perfect chorus. This melodic sound would be very familiar with XXXTENTACION fans as similar sounds can be heard throughout some of his early albums.
6. NF & Sasha Alex Sloan – Only
NF known for creating sad music. His raps project an alarming amount of emotion and therefore are perfect for blasting at a loud volume. This track is one of my favourites, mainly due Sasha Alex Sloan’s contribution on the chorus.
5. Lil Baby & Gunna – Close Friends
This track comes straight off Lil Baby and Gunna’s collab album Drip Harder. The theme of this track focuses on relationships. This complimented with the slow production makes for a perfect song to listen to at 3am.
4. Eminem – Beautiful
Eminem’s Relapse era focuses on the after effects of drug usage. This track perfectly sums up the feeling of being in a slump with no motivation to do anything. Eminem projects his own feeling of being alone with no one around to understand him.
3. Rod Wave – Heart on Ice
Rod Wave expressing his feelings towards relationships, explaining how his heart had been broken so many times. This is definitely one of my favourite tracks of his.
2. Trippie Redd – Who Needs Love
Trippie Redd focuses on the them of love, and how it isn’t needed. I’m not too sure, but it sounds like he was recovering from some sort of heartbreak whilst recording this track. The emotion in the vocals make it better as well.
1. Eminem – Headlights
Yes, I know. Another Eminem song. But if you listen to this track you’ll understand why I’ve included it. In this song it seems he is directly talking to his mother, apologising for the mistakes he made in the past. This is made even more powerful due to the fact Eminem’s early work is notorius for mention his mother, and not in a positive way. In this track he explains his regrets for his early record Cleanin’ out my Closet. The vocals for the chorus to Headlights is performed by Nate Ruess.
I went in headfirst, never thinkin' about who what I said hurt
In what verse, my mom probably got it the worst
The brunt of it, but as stubborn as we are, did I take it too far?
"Cleanin' Out My Closet" and all them other songs
But regardless, I don't hate you ‘cause, Ma
You're still beautiful to me, ‘cause you're my mom
